If you are thinking of starting a basic diet for weight loss or general health, there is no time like the present. The etymology for the word ‘diet’ is derived from the latin word diaeta and means ‘manner of life’.




The diet choices that you make every day affect to your standard of living. If you make bad diet choices every day, your chances of being overweight are greater. It also increases your chances for obesity related diseases and ailments. Some of these ailments can be treated with medications, but it is better to avoid these types of problems.

Remember the old saying ‘you are what you eat’? This is so true. Your body is much like a car. It performs a lot better if it has the recommended fuel and routine maintenance done. Imagine what would happen if you forgot to get your oil changed or used diesel fuel instead of unleaded. The results would be disasterous! Your car would probably be destroyed or cost thousands to repair. If you fuel your body with foods that are high in fat, cholesterol, and sugar your body can react in much the same way.

Your body will function much better if your basic diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats, chicken and fish. These basic types of foods provide important nutrients and vitamins that help your body run efficiently. Citrus fruits provide important Vitamin C that helps your immune system guard against infections and airborne illnesses like the flu. You can get a healthy serving of Vitamin C from a glass of orange or grapefruit juice, or from eating the whole fruit. During the winter season, this is imperative to avoid potential ‘downtime’ because of illness.

Following a basic diet full of healthy foods will rev up your engine and help to assure longevity.
